EXCLUSIVE: Surrey police, RCMP investigating viral South Asian cartop shooting video

By Alex Zoltan

True North has identified the vehicle featured in a viral video of South Asian men recklessly firing guns from atop a car as a 2024 Jeep Wrangler, with dealership-issued plate covers matching those used by a Surrey, B.C., dealership.

Police in British Columbia say they are aware of the video circulating on social media that appears to show a group of young men of Indian descent firing guns into the air from the roof of a Jeep Wrangler with a B.C. license plate.

The 22-second clip, widely shared on X over the past 48 hours, shows at least three men—believed to be of South Asian descent—climbing atop a black Jeep Wrangler while brandishing large guns and firing multiple rounds into the woods.

Using details visible in the video, True North was able to match the make and model of the Jeep. The license plate cover seen in the video matches covers issued by Brown Boys Auto from Surrey, although the dealership said it had no knowledge that their plate cover was witnessed in the video.

Photos of vehicles for sale on the dealership’s Facebook and Instagram pages feature the same license plate cover seen in the viral video online.

True North spoke to someone at Brown Boys Auto who said they had “no knowledge” of their company’s branding being associated with the viral video.

They added, however, that the Jeep Wrangler make and model is a popular one with their customers and that they had sold many of them recently, including one such vehicle just three or four days earlier.

Someone else from Brown Boys Auto then offered to provide True North with a list of customers they had sold the vehicle to in recent months before abruptly hanging up.

A Facebook post from nine months ago shows a 2024 Jeep Wrangler with the same plate cover that was listed as sold. While this is consistent in appearance with the vehicle in the viral clip, True North has not confirmed whether the vehicle sold and the one in the viral video are in fact the same vehicle.

Authorities have not confirmed whether any crimes were committed or if the video was filmed on public or private land.

Regardless, Section 86(1) of the Criminal Code makes it an offence in Canada to “without lawful excuse” use a firearm “in a careless manner or without reasonable precautions for the safety of other persons.”

When originally reached for comment, a representative for the RCMP told True North they were not aware of the video or the incident.

Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton with the Surrey Police Service, meanwhile, confirmed to True North that his organization was “aware of the video” but stopped short of confirming whether the video was captured in Surrey specifically.

Shortly thereafter, RCMP informed True North that they, too, were now aware of the video and that it was “part of an active investigation.”

The circulation of the viral video comes amid heightened scrutiny of gun-related violence primarily across the Lower Mainland and Southern Ontario, where gang shootings, extortion threats, and assassinations have at times drawn international attention.
