Former NDP MP Charlie Angus has once again called on Prime Minister Mark Carney to ban U.S. President Donald Trump from entering Canada days before the G7 leaders’ summit in Alberta.
Angus resorted to calling Trump a flurry of insults including labelling him an “authoritarian fascist,” which Canada needs to “contain” by barring his entry to the country, at the parliamentary press gallery in Parliament, on Wednesday.
“This morning, I offer my deep concern, solidarity, and prayers with the people of California, who are out in the streets unarmed defending the rule of law against illegal kidnapping and deportation,” Angus said. “They’re being faced down by the military might of the United States Marines.
Angus was referencing anti-deportation riots which have broken out in Los Angeles, marked by masked men wielding Mexican flags, burning cars, throwing bricks at occupied police cars and breaking windows with hatchets.
The riots are against Trump and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers’ deportation of illegal immigrants in the U.S. Deportation was a ballot box issue in the U.S. during the last election.
“We’re not talking about creeping fascism here. This is full-on police state tyranny from the gangster president, Donald Trump, and this is the man who will soon be crossing our border to attend the G7 meetings in Canada,” Angus said.
He said he “understands” why Carney would want to avoid escalating divides between the U.S. and Canada but declared that Canada must stand against Trump and ensure he doesn’t have “all access” in negotiations at the G7 summit.
Angus further propagated the since disproven claims that Trump was working on behalf of Russia.
Angus said Canada needs to “contain” the U.S. to preserve the “democratic” world order.
“I urge the Prime Minister to work with us and work with our allies, and send a very clear message that we will not support in any way the rise of an authoritarian regime south of the border that is using the military against its own people,” he said. “We have to stop pretending that Donald Trump is just being Trump.”
Angus has retired from seeking to re-enter the House of Commons but has now been working as an activist.
While stil an MP, Angus suggested Elon Musk have his Canadian citizenship revoked for his role in the Trump administration. However he later admitted in an interview that the move was unrealistic.
At the end of March, before the Canadian election, Angus led a group of anti-Trump protesters during an “Elbows Up” rally at the U.S. consulate in Toronto. His rhetoric was similar at that time, too, calling Trump a “gangster” and a “tyrant.”
