A 19-year-old male has been arrested after a dramatic foot chase and what police are calling an “attempted armed carjacking” in Ajax.

Durham Regional Police Service posted a video to X showing the pursuit and dramatic takedown. The post also noted that the suspect “was out on bail” before the alleged offences.

Nidhish Mathisudan, 19, was charged with multiple offences, including robbery, possession of a weapon for committing an offence, obstructing a police officer and failing to comply with a police order.

On Sunday, at approximately 1:00 p.m., members of Durham Regional Police Service’s West Division responded to an attempted armed carjacking at a residence near Salem Road and Williamson Drive E.

According to police, the victim was sitting in his vehicle, parked in the driveway of a residence, when a man approached him.

Police said the suspect approached the front of the vehicle, pulled a weapon from his waistband, and demanded the victim hand over the car.

The victim then quickly pulled out of the driveway and left the area.

The suspect also fled prior to police arrival.

Undeterred, officers conducted an air search and located a suspicious man in the area. Maintaining a visual on the suspect while directing officers on the ground to his location, police arrested him after a brief but dramatic foot pursuit.

Officers said they located a knife believed to have been used in the attempted carjacking while searching the arrestee.

Despite the suspect’s alleged use of a weapon, the victim did not sustain any physical injuries.
