A New Westminster resident was released by a judge shortly after using a machete to threaten staff at a donair shop before using the weapon to carve himself some chicken and lamb and running off.
The incident, which was captured on CCTV video, happened on April 26 at Paradise Donair on 12th Street in New Westminster. The man was filmed pointing a large knife at restaurant staff and stealing multiple pieces of donair meat from the grill. He also took what appeared to be the restaurant’s signature Halifax sauce.
A suspect was apprehended by officers near 8th Street and 8th Avenue following the daytime robbery. The arrest location is close to both the targeted business and, notably, a local food bank.
Police confirmed that while the event was likely traumatic for victims, thankfully no one was injured during the incident.
The accused, Sidney Reid Hayden, was subsequently charged with robbery and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
He was quickly released, albeit on conditions, which included not being in possession of weapons.
“This is a very unique situation,” said New Westminster police Sgt. Andrew Leader.
“This is not something I have seen before or any of my colleagues have — especially when you consider someone used a weapon to cut meat. Usually, these weapons are used for intimidation purposes or to come away with something other than food,” Leaver continued.
A trial date for the accused has not yet been set.
