A man is dead after a daylight shooting in Brampton, Ontario prompting comment from Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre.
The brazen afternoon shooting occurred at a strip mall in the area of Bramalea Road and Dewside Drive shortly after 1 p.m., according to Const. Mandeep Khatra, spokesperson for Peel Regional Police.
On arrival, police say a man was found with “obvious signs of trauma” and was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts.
Investigators believe the suspect or suspects fled before officers arrived, said Const. Khatra.
“Based on the information we have so far, this appears to be an isolated incident,” Khatra told reporters near the plaza.
“This is a tragic event in a busy area. What’s happened here is unfortunate, but we want to reassure the public that we are doing everything possible to hold those responsible accountable.”
Few details have been released, including whether there was one or multiple shooters, but police said the shooting is believed to be an isolated incident.
The victim has not yet been identified but several reports suggest the victim was a popular business owner who owned a vape shop in the shopping plaza as well as a trucking company.
Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre took to X to comment on the story:
“Yesterday’s brazen daylight murder in Brampton was horrifying. My thoughts are with the family of the victim and everyone who knew him.”
“After 10 years of Carney-Trudeau Liberals, gang crime, extortion and violence are becoming all too common in our communities.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney did not offer a comment.
