Man arrested in Toronto for unprovoked stabbing spree

Police revealed that a 23-year-old man who was wanted in connection with three separate, “unprovoked” stabbings in downtown Toronto has been arrested.

The Toronto Police Service made the arrest after requesting the public’s assistance in identifying a male suspect wanted in a series of “unprovoked Aggravated Assault investigations.”

On Sunday, Duncan MacKenzie, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder, and three counts each of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon or imitation weapon, failure to comply with a release order, possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace, and carrying a concealed weapon.

The first incident is alleged to have occurred on March 23, just before noon, near Simcoe Street and Bremner Boulevard.

Police allege that the suspect stabbed someone who was sleeping before fleeing the area. The victim sustained serious injuries.

Only days later, police allege Mackenzie stabbed another person from behind while they were walking alone near Dan Leckie Way and Queens Quay West. The victim’s injuries were described by police as “non-life-threatening.”

In a disturbing and chillingly similar incident, a third attack occurred on Saturday at about 10:50 p.m. near King Street West and York Street when the suspect stabbed someone, again, from behind while they were standing outside of a building.

Toronto police said that they believe all three incidents were stranger attacks, meaning that the victim and the suspect were completely unknown to one another.

Mackenzie is scheduled to appear in bail court on March 31.
