Former U.K. prime minister Liz Truss called out Liberal Leader Mark Carney once again for his role as the governor of the Bank of England during an economic meltdown and warned Canadians to “wake up.”
Truss has been an outspoken critic of Carney’s past, particularly after he entered Canadian politics and has been attempting to warn voters that his economic resume has major blemishes.
Calling him a “World Economic Forum regular” and “a champion of net zero,” Truss said that Carney “did a terrible job” as governor of the Bank of England, a position he held from 2013 to 2020.
During an interview with U.S. political commentator Glenn Beck last month, Truss said that the Liberal party’s selection of Carney as their new leader left her “puzzled.”
“Mark Carney was the governor of the Bank of England who printed money to a huge extent, creating inflation,” she said. “He was the one who created the pensions crisis in the first place by not regulating the pensions industry properly.”
Truss’ time as prime minister was short-lived after her mini-budget triggered a market nosedive which saw the British pound fall to a 37-year low.
She called his rise in Canadian politics “extraordinary” given that “he created a lot of the problems that blew up on my watch” that she was “blamed for.”
“He backed Labour in the election and Rachel Reeves’ policies which are leading the country to bankruptcy,” said Truss. “So why on earth the Liberal Party of Canada has selected this man, I have no idea.”
She went on to say that she believes his selection to be “illegitimate.”
“He’s never been elected as a member of Parliament in Canada. I’m utterly puzzled,” said Truss.
“Justin Trudeau has pursued a lot of the policies Europe has been pursuing, and America has raced ahead of us. They pursued all of these woke policies, high taxes, high spending, not using their natural resources, and Justin Trudeau was the architect of that and Mark Carney has been the advocate,” she said.
“I don’t know what is going on in Canada, but in the same way as people in Britain need to wake up to what the threat to our country is, I think they need to wake up in Canada.”
Truss previously warned against Carney during an interview with the Counter Signal in January following his decision to enter the Liberal leadership race.
“I strongly recommend not backing Mark Carney for his policies on Net Zero. It was disastrous for Britain. It would be disastrous for Canada,” she said at the time.
Former Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper also wanted to set the record straight on the 2008 financial crisis, which Carney, who was the Bank of Canada governor at the time, has regularly taken credit for during his campaign.
At a campaign rally for Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre in Edmonton on Tuesday, Harper wanted the over ten thousand supporters who were present to know that this endorsement was coming from “the guy who actually did lead Canada through the global financial crisis.”
“I hear there’s someone else claiming it was him,” said Harper. “It was, of course, our government, the late great Jim Flaherty (who served as finance minister during that time).”
