Conservative David Bexte won the Bow River riding in Alberta with 78.8 per cent of the vote, defeating Liberal candidate Bentley Barnes.
The riding, located south of Calgary, is considered a safe Conservative stronghold.
Bexte, who was running for the first time, received 43,891 votes, while Barnes took 9,421 votes. NDP candidate Louisa Gwin received 1,653 votes.
The seat had been held by Conservative MP Martin Shields since 2015; however, the 76-year-old announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election.
Bexte is a lifelong resident of the Bow River riding and previously worked in Alberta’s energy sector for over 25 years.
Both the Green Party and the People’s Party initially planned to run candidates in the riding but ultimately did not have anyone on the ballot.
Bexte ran on a platform of decreasing taxes for farmers and fighting against Bill C-18, which has resulted in a ban on Canadians sharing news on certain social media platforms.
Nearly 120,000 residents live in the riding, which includes over sixty communities.
Tom Lipp, who ran for the Christian Heritage Party, and United Party candidate Aaron Patton also participated.
