Just a day after the Liberals’ victory in the 2025 federal election, Prime Minister Mark Carney called U.S. President Donald Trump, setting up a meeting between the two leaders.
In a short press release, the prime minister said that Trump congratulated Carney on his election victory and asserted that the leaders came to a mutual agreement to work together as “independent, sovereign nations — for their mutual benefit.”
Taking questions from the media during a cabinet meeting, said that Carney called him wanting to make a deal and that he won the Canadian election because he was the least anti-Trump candidate.
“I think we’re gonna have a great relationship. He called me up yesterday, he said let’s make a deal,” said Trump, referring to Carney.
“You know he was running for office, they both hated Trump and it was the one that hated Trump I think the least that won. I actually think the Conservative hated me much more than the so-called Liberal. He’s a pretty Liberal guy.”
Trump remarked that while he finds Carney to be a nice guy, he won the election in a tight race.
“I spoke to him yesterday, he couldn’t have been nicer and I congratulated him. You know it was a very mixed signal because it’s almost even, which makes it very complicated for the country. It was a pretty tight race.”
Trump confirmed that he invited Carney to the White House, saying the visit would happen within a week.
In an interview Trump gave to the Atlantic published on election day, the president remarked that the Conservatives held a 25-point lead in the polls until he was re-elected and flipped Canada’s opinion environment with his on-and-off tariffs and comments about making Canada the 51st state.
Trump had previously suggested in an interview with Fox News’s Laura Ingraham that he did not care if the Conservatives lost in the Canadian election, saying it is easier to deal with a Liberal.
“The conservative that’s running is, stupidly, no friend of mine. I don’t know him, but he said negative things. When he says negative things, I couldn’t care less,” said Trump.
Carney also spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron who congratulated him on his election victory and promised to deepen defence and commercial ties with one another.
