The suspect in a dramatic Surrey home invasion captured on video last Wednesday will remain in custody until at least Friday.
David William Charles Hoffman is accused of attacking a resident at the Breakaway Bays modular home park on Feb. 26 before attempting to break into two other units.
A citizen brandishing a bloodied hockey stick kept the suspect at bay until police arrived.
Following his arrest, Hoffman was taken to Peace Arch Hospital, where he allegedly assaulted an RCMP officer and attempted to take their weapon.
Hoffman now faces 12 charges, including assault, attempted robbery, breaking and entering, mischief, assaulting a peace officer by choking, attempting to disarm an officer, along with separate assault charges related to the incident at Peace Arch.
Hoffman had an extensive criminal history prior to the incident in Surrey last week, with court records showing over a dozen charges going back as far as 2008.
Hoffman was charged just months ago with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, and willfully resisting a peace officer.
He was released on bail Jan. 2.
The most recent incident in Surrey has prompted political reactions, with Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Elenore Sturko attributing the attack to the government’s failure to address issues related to untreated mental illness, addiction, and homelessness.
Sturko argued the incident in Surrey offers evidence that “David Eby’s continued failure to address the mental illness and addiction crisis places all British Columbians at risk.”
“As British Columbians, we must demand immediate change from this government to improve health, safety, and security for everyone,” Sturko continued in the legislature.
Hoffman remains in custody, with his court proceedings adjourned until Friday.
