Surrey police alert residents to months-long string of break-and-enters

The Surrey RCMP is alerting residents in Panorama Ridge, South Surrey, and Crescent Beach to a string of break-ins targeting single-family homes.

The Surrey RCMP Property Crime Target Team is leading the investigation and believes these incidents may be connected to similar residential burglaries across the Lower Mainland.

Since the RCMP’s warning in November, the Surrey Police Service said it has recorded 14 break-ins in the affected areas.

SPS spokesperson Ian MacDonald said it’s unclear if the incidents are connected: “We certainly have some patterns [but] occasionally it’ll be two people that are attempting to break-in, sometimes it’s a lone person, sometimes the point of entry might be a sliding glass door.”

Authorities suspect a coordinated group of three individuals is largely responsible for the crimes. They appear to target large homes between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. when no one is home.

Their primary method of entry involves breaking the glass on patio doors. Once inside, they focus on stealing high-value items such as jewelry, cash and designer clothing.

Investigators believe the suspects conduct surveillance on properties before breaking in.

“We urge residents to keep their homes secure, remain vigilant in their neighborhoods, and report any suspicious activity or individuals to the police,” said Sergeant Tammy Lobb, Media Relations Officer with Surrey RCMP.

Descriptions of the suspects are limited, as all three suspects tighten their hood strings around their balaclavas to obscure their facial features.

One suspect is described as “approximately 6’3” tall with a heavy build, wearing a hoodie, dark sweatpants, and a balaclava.”

Another suspect is described as a “male, approximately 6’0” tall with a muscular build, wearing a hoodie, dark sweatpants, and a balaclava.”

And a third suspect was described as “Male, approximately 5’8” tall with a slender build, wearing a hoodie, dark sweatpants, and a balaclava.”

To enhance community safety, Surrey RCMP recently hosted a Block Watch meeting to provide home security tips and guidance on when to contact authorities.

“Residents may notice an increased police presence as officers conduct additional patrols in these neighborhoods,” Sgt. Lobb added.

Another Block Watch meeting is planned for the near future.
