While OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been the dominant figure in artificial intelligence chatbots, an alternative platform spearheaded by Elon Musk appears to be coming for its throne.
Musk announced that Grok could be downloaded as its own app on Wednesday.
Grok was initially created in 2023 as a basic model. By early 2024, it evolved into Grok 2, which had “improved understanding, better answers, and more natural conversations,” according to it.
By late 2024, Grok 3 was its next evolution and featured added tools like analyzing X posts, web searches, and content processing.
However, until recently, Grok was only available for use on X.com.
Grok was developed by xAI, which Musk founded in Mar. 2023.
ChatGPT was founded by OpenAI in 2015, with the involvement of Musk. He left the company later due to conflicts of interest and a falling out with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman with Musk unsuccessfully advocating that the artificial model should remain open source.
Despite both programs being chatbots that can perform similar tasks, there are some key differences. Musk has claimed that, unlike ChatGPT, Grok does not censor responses and is more willing to discuss controversial topics.
At the time of publication, Grok was in second place in Apple’s free apps, followed by ChatGPT in third place. Taking the throne past both of the chatbots was Sportsnet.
Musk posted a screenshot of his own, showing Grok as the number one ranked app in the productivity category, while X was the number one ranked app in the news category.
Apple’s App Store rankings vary based on users’ geography and the popularity of the apps where they live.
Musk previously posted a different screenshot, where Grok was ranked number one on the top free apps chart.
He also showcased that it can design video games and has a voice mode that people can speak with.
Musk began a thread on X asking people to reply with any issues that they uncover, saying that the chatbot will improve every day this week.
